James was one of our outstanding Orangemen,strong in intellect, and true
in judgement,faithful in friendship,and in consequence was honoured by the
membership of this Province by being elected R.W.Grand Master in 1918, and
again re-elected in 1919 and 1920. Upon vacating the Grand Master's Chair
he was elected to the office of Provincial Grand Secretary, where he laboured
faithfully untill he moved to Vancouver in 1924. He was born in London England on October 13th 1864, the son of Sir Francis Boyd Outram, Bart. He was educated at Hailesbury College and Pembroke College Cambridge, where he gained his degree in Master of Arts. He came to the Canadian Rockies in 1900, and devoted himself to Alpine persuits for many years making his headquarters in Calgary. He ascended the hitherto unclimbed Mount Assiniboine in 1901, Mount Outram the highest peak of the west branch of the north fork of the Saskatchewan, has been named after him. He wrote "In the Heart of the Canadian Rockies" and several magazine articles all dealing with mountaineering. In 1921 he was married to a daughter of the late Joseph Balfour. He had no children. He was a member of the Anglican Church, in the congregation of St Stephens, Calgary. P.P.G.M. Sir James outram, Bart., passed away after some months of illness in Victoria B.C. on March 13th 1925. |
