Lodge History.

Newton Saville Loyal Orange Lodge number 646 was first formed in 1798 in the City of Dublin, ( back to bottom of page) the very same year the first Orange Lodge in its present format was established at the "DIAMOND" in County Armagth. The first W.Master being recorded being a Bro Adam Mcmalion from records obtained it would appear the membership was taken from Military personal and the Lodge belonged to the City of Dublin Orange District. The Lodge in 1825 them moved to the City of Londonderry and joined the Orange District there, situated in the Garvagh area, the Worshipful Master being recorded at that time was W.Bro William Crawford and in 1835 W.Bro William Taylor became the W.Master. Bro Mckeown is recorded as the W.Master in 1847. In 1856 there seems to be a bit of a mix up between the Dublin and Armagh Orange District or Counties with the result of a duplicate warrant being issued with the Orange Lodge Number 646 being issued in Macosquin, Co.Londonderry and the Worshipful Master being a Bro John Moody, while Bro Andrew Dunlop became the Worshipful Master of the original Loyal Orange Lodge number 646 then located in the Garvagh area, County Londonderry.

After the dissolution of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland and their request for Orange Lodges to dissolve and disband, the members of L.O.L. 646 decided to meet and carry on with their normal business and records show the Lodge was still operating in 1875 in Garvagh with Bro William Crawford being the W.Master, however after the dissolution the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland reformed and started to reissue new warrants, it is recorded in Grand Lodge records another duplicated Orange Lodge warrant for the Number 646 was issued by the Grand Lodge to the area of Annahoe best, in Co.Londonderry,at this time the Orange Institution in Ireland was reforming and the Grand Lodge was being inundated with requests for Lodge warrants and membership.

The members of the original L.O.L.646 were entitled to claim this number back and the number 646 stayed in the area of Garvagh. In 1891 L.O.L. 646 was on the move again this time the Lodge moved to the Castlecawfield area with the W.Master being listed as W.Bro James A Kerr, in 1915 the Lodge moved yet again to the Fivemiletown area and the W.Master then being listed as W.Bro Rev.Thomas Stothers. With the out break of the first world war in 1914 the members of L.O.L.646 were not slow in coming forward to help and assist the War effort and many members of the Lodge joined the 36th Ulster Division and sadly some did not return home, many were in the forefront of such conflicts, as the Battle of the Somme, Passondale, Ypres and also on the fields of Flanders, these Battles were the most major conflicts of any War and Ulster like every were else suffered great losses, indeed history records that there was not a Town or Village in Ulster that did not suffer the loss of a loved one. sadly this was to be repeated in the 1939-45 War and the members of L.O.L.646 listed once again together with the rest of the Province.
