The Orange Order in the Gold Coast/Ghana came into being in 1918 through the ingenuity of a Mr R. E Sharlley, then a Post Master. He came across a copy of the English "Orange Standard" which contained the articles on the Orange Order. The articles fascinated him and he therefore wrote to the Grand Secretary of England, Rev Louis Ewart, who put him in touch with L.O.L 867 "Defenders of the Truth" Lome, Togo in 1917. He joined the "Defenders of the Truth" that same year.
After learning the rudiment of the Order, the realisation came to him that the Order should be brought across the border to the Gold Cost. He therefore gathered a few interested friends with the intention of forming an Orange Order. An application to England for a warrant resulted in their being granted warrant No. 891 "Pride of Keta" which is still in existence, and works today as L.O.L 1 in the register of the Grand Orange Institution of Ghana. The "Pride of Keta" was instituted in the 7th September 1918 some 83 years ago.
Between 1920 and 1950 the Order became dormant, but it continued to exist by an onerous means. One Mr F. K. Fiawoo became deeply interested in the Order. He went to England and was initiated into the Orange Institution in Liverpool. After study in America, he was ordained into the Ministry of the Africa Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (AME ZION). On his return to the Volta Region, he was instrumental in reviving the "Pride of Keta" and founded the second Lodge the "Elizabethan" L.O.L 495 in 1957.
The wives and children of the brothers learning that there was a Ladies and Junior section of the Order showed interest in becoming members. Rev. Dr F.K. Fiawoo again went to England, and by special dispensation was intiiated into a Ladies Lodge. He learned the lectures and rituals and returned to Ghana and founded the first Ladies Lodge "Wycliffe" L.L.O.L Np 160 in 1959.
By dint of hard work, the Order in Ghana grew by leaps and bounds to attain the Grand Lodge status in 1985. At one time the Grand Orange Institution of Ghana could boast of 20 Male, 13 Female and 3 Junior lodges with a total population of 1,000. However with the proliferation of charismatic churches and the born agains, coupled with the economic trend, the Order has dwindled to 8 male, 6 female but still with 3 Junior Lodges with a population of some 350. The active Lodges can be found in Keta, the foundation of Orangeism in Ghana, Dzelukope near Keta, Anyako, Ho, Kpando, Accra and Tema. The dormant ones were at Anloga, Peki, Dzodze and Agbosume.
The Grand Lodge is doing its utmost best to revive some of the dormant lodges and with time and the enthusiam of the present Grand Master we shall succeed.
